Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? Take a look at the FAQ or contact us anytime. If you’re ready to go, feel free to Register today.

  • Keiki students are typically ages 6-12 years old. If your child is younger than that, it all depends on his or her ability to focus (Sessions are 1 hour long) and follow along.

If you are unsure, feel free to bring your child to any of our free Intro to ‘Ukulele Sessions, every Sunday from 12:30-1:00pm at Kukui Grove. We are in the suite across from T-Mobile / Ainofea. There we can show your child some ‘ukulele fundamentals and assess whether they might be a good fit for the Keiki ‘Ukulele Group.

  • Yes! Aldrine Guerrero is a world-renowned ‘ukulele teacher and performer. He grew up on Kaua‘i and knows the importance of encouraging music and ‘ukulele playing from a young age.

As a member of the AG ‘Ukulele Academy Keiki groups, your child will have Aldrine as their primary instructor and guide on their music journey.

  • Feel free to register your child using any of the Sign Up / Register buttons on this website. This is a monthly subscription (can be canceled at any time). Future payments will be billed on the 1st of the month.

Once you have paid for this month’s membership, your child can attend as many of the Keiki Group Sessions for the Level that they are in. Come on Tuesday, Thursday, or both!

  • It’s ok if your child is only able to attend just one of the Sessions during the week. Aldrine teaches the same lesson on both Tuesday and Thursday, especially since some students can only attend on one of the two days.

If your child isn’t able to attend either Tuesday or Thursday in a given week, online replays of the week’s Session will be available to you on this website. Simply Log In and you will will be able to see the videos.

  • With your child’s AG ‘Ukulele Academy subscription, you are able to pause your membership for 1 month out of the year. Your child will still have access to all of the online video content and Session replays during your “paused” month when you aren’t paying.

If your keiki needs to miss more than 1 month, we recommend that you cancel your subscription and re-start it whenever they are able to return.

Please Contact Us anytime if you need help pausing or canceling your Academy membership subscription.

  • All students should have their own ‘ukulele so they can play and practice at home. As long as the ‘ukulele can be tuned and stays in tune while playing, it should be fine for learning on.

Most ‘ukulele purchased at a music store or from an online ‘ukulele-specific retailer will work for student learning needs.

After your child has learned his or her fundamentals and you would like to upgrade to an ‘ukulele that would be helpful for their musical growth, please Contact Us for more specific recommendations.

  • All song sheets and other resources that your child needs will be provided and emailed to you after each Session.

We ask that your child keep a well-organized binder of the songs the group is learning. Parents will need to purchase:

    • 3 ring binder (1”)

    • sheet protectors

Other items that are nice-to-have but not required are: a digital clip-on instrument tuner (available online or at music stores), a portable music stand, an ‘ukulele strap, the AG ‘Ukulele Academy t-shirt for performances (youth S-XL available).

  • Yes! The AG ‘Ukulele Academy holds regular Academy Student Concerts at Kukui Grove Center every 4 months, so your child will be performance-ready by the next Concert event. It is a great way for parents to see the progress that our keiki have made.

Performances are encouraged but not mandatory. We offer support and guidance for any student dealing with performance anxiety, but if for ANY reason your child is unable to perform, that’s totally ok!

In addition to Academy Student Concerts, our keiki students have opportunities to perform and show off their skills for community events throughout the year. Some community events that our keiki have been featured in include:

    • The Kaua‘i ‘Ukulele Festival

    • Kukui Grove Mele Makeke

    • The Kaua‘i Comic Con

    • Relay for Life

    • Waimea Town Celebration ‘Ukulele Contest

Look forward to seeing your child performing soon!

“We really enjoy watching her confidence and appreciation for music grow. She’s not just learning an instrument - she’s learning to love music.”

— Derek Maeda (Brinley’s Dad)

The biggest joy has been seeing Pa‘ihi discover enjoyment on the other side of difficulty. “She learned to push through and found her love for music.”
